What CITIZENERGY is about
Renewable energies are inevitably decentralised. Renewable energy projects stand for regionalised energy production and the participation of consumers who sometimes even become prosumers – people who themselves produce the energy they consume. We are currently on the cusp of a new Europe. As European citizens, we have the unique opportunity to shape the Europe we want, and this includes the model for energy production and supply. Renewable energies must be tailored to the needs of Europe’s citizens.
Citizenergy projects are therefore more than mere investments in renewable energies: citizen energy means that a private individual jointly promote a power plant and assumes responsibility for her or his investment. Citizenergy projects function on a peer-to-peer basis, whereby producers and consumers meet as equals and create a decentralised network. They realise the principles of subsidiarity, regionalism and civic participation, and address social and democratic issues.
